چکیده

The adsorption of 1-naphthalenesulphonic (NS), 1,5-naphthalenedisulphonic (NDS) and 1,3,6-naphthalenetrisulphonic (NTS) acids on ozonated activated carbons was assessed. Commercial activated carbon (Filtrasorb 400) was treated with different ozone doses in order to study the effect of ozone treatment on their surface properties, and investigate the behaviour of these carbon samples in the adsorption of the above naphthalenesulphonic acids. Experimental results showed that the adsorption capacity sharply decreased as the number of sulphonic groups in the aromatic ring increased. As the concentration of oxygenated electron-withdrawing groups on the carbon surface increased, a significant reduction in adsorption capacity of aromatic sulphonic compounds was observed. These results indicate that the adsorption process takes place mainly by p–p dispersion interactions between the aromatic ring electrons of the naphthalenesulphonic acids and the basal plane of the activated carbon. Moreover, in all cases, the adsorption capacity of aromatic sulphonic acids decreased as the pH increased. This indicates that electrostatic interactions between the adsorbate and the carbon surface also took place, as a result of the ionisation of oxygenated surface groups on the carbon surface. Nevertheless, the dispersive (non-electrostatic) forces govern these adsorption processes.  2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Adsorption of nitrate from aqueous solution using activated carbon-supported Fe0, Fe2 (SO4)3, and FeSO4

In this laboratory scale study, impregnated almond shell activated carbon was used as adsorbent to investigate its feasibility for nitrate adsorption from aqueous medium. The effects of activated carbon dosage and contact time have been examined in batch experiments. Experimental data show that impregnated activated carbons by Fe0, Fe2 (SO4)3, and FeSO4 were more effective than virgin almond ac...

Ozonation of 1,3,6-naphthalenetrisulphonic acid catalysed by activated carbon in aqueous phase

This paper presents experimental results of the ozonation of a model aromatic sulphonic compound, 1,3,6-naphthalenetrisulphonic acid (NTS), in the presence of different activated carbons with different physical and chemical surface properties. Carbons used were commercial activated carbons (Ceca AC40, Norit, Merck, Witco, Ceca GAC, Filtrasorb 400, Sorbo) with or without demineralisation pre-tre...

ADSORPTION OF p-NITROPHENOL IN THREE DIFFERENT ACTIVATED CARBONS AT DIFFERENT pH

Adsorption of p-Nitrophenol by three different activated carbons (F100, S.E.I. and B.D.H.) was carried out at 301 K and at controlled pH conditions. Two different adsorption models (Langmuir model and Freundlich model) were studied and compared. The adsorption capacity of the carbons depends on the Point of Zero Charge (PZC) and surface area of the carbons. Adsorption of the solute at higher pH...

Removal of naphthalene from aqueous solution on chemically modified activated carbons.

The aim of this work was to correlate the textural and chemical features of carbonaceous adsorbents with the adsorption capacity of naphthalene from aqueous phase, at the concentration in which this compound is usually found in wastewater from coke ovens. The study reveals that the adsorption capacity in different carbon materials depends not only on the textural characteristics of the material...

Adsorption of Cr(III) on ozonised activated carbon. Importance of Cpi-cation interactions.

The adsorption of Cr(III) in aqueous solution was investigated on a series of ozonised activated carbons, analysing the effect of oxygenated surface groups on the adsorption process. A study was carried out to determine the adsorption isotherms and the influence of the pH on the adsorption of this metal. The adsorption capacity and affinity of the adsorbent for Cr(III) increased with the increa...
